Healthy New Year Resolutions: Finding Inner Balance in 2023

Welcome to 2023, the year of nourishment and balance, where prioritising your health is key.

Say goodbye to unsustainable and restrictive resolutions. Instead, let's focus on sustainable habits that promote overall well-being. Here are five simple lifestyle habits to prioritise this year:

1. Embrace a predominantly whole-food diet with abundant colour, variety, and plants.

Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, unsalted nuts, seeds, eggs, lean meats, fresh fish, seafood, and whole grains into your meals. Opt for real, rainbow food over processed options whenever possible.

2. Prioritise getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

Research highlights the significant role of sleep in our health. Establish a wind-down routine to follow before bed, which includes avoiding screens (blue light exposure) for at least 30 minutes prior to sleep. Yoga Nidra is a powerful practice that helps prepare the body for rest by inducing profound relaxation and alleviating stress, ultimately leading to improved sleep quality.

3. Engage in daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes.

Exercise goes beyond weight loss. Find activities that get your blood pumping and make time for them regularly. This can include walking, jogging, swimming, gardening, dancing, or even gymnastics. Whenever feasible, enjoy 20 minutes of safe, non-burning sun exposure daily to boost your vitamin D levels.

4. Hydrate yourself frequently and adequately throughout the day.

As a general guideline, aim to drink 30 mL of plain, filtered water per kilogram of body weight daily. Additionally, consume 1 litre of water for every hour of moderate-intensity exercise. Carrying a water bottle with you can make it easier to stay hydrated.

5. Prioritise your mental well-being and be kind to your mind.

Recognise that optimal physical well-being is closely linked to mental and emotional well-being. Never underestimate the power of meditation, journaling, gratitude, laughter, social connection, and spending time in nature.
