Is coaching right for me? Signs you're ready

Sometimes we reach a point where we know we want something to be different. We may have a clear goal we want to achieve. We may feel stuck or disconnected from what we really want. Or we may simply recognise that we've changed, life has changed, and it's time to consider what comes next.

That's often when people start wondering about coaching. But it can be hard to tell whether you're actually ready, or whether it's just a rough patch that will pass.

Here are the signs we see most often in people who are ready.

In short

You might be ready for coaching if you keep coming back to the same feeling, know what to do but aren't doing it, or feel stuck despite doing well on paper. If you're in crisis or struggling with your mental health, a therapist or GP is the better first step.

1. You keep coming back to the same feeling

It might be restlessness, flatness, or a quiet sense that you're not living the life you meant to. It doesn't go away after a holiday or a good week. It keeps returning.

When a feeling keeps coming back, it's usually asking for attention, not more distraction.

2. You know what you "should" do, but you're not doing it

You've read the books. You've listened to the podcasts. You could probably give a friend great advice about your own situation. But somehow, knowing hasn't turned into doing.

That gap between knowing and doing is exactly where coaching works best.

3. You're doing well on paper, but it doesn't feel that way

Many of the people we work with look like they have it together. Good job, busy life, people who rely on them. And yet privately, something feels off.

You don't need to be falling apart to want something better.

4. A big change has shifted your sense of who you are

Redundancy, a career change, children leaving home, a relationship ending, a health scare, turning a certain age. Big changes don't just change your circumstances. They can change how you see yourself, and that's often harder to sort through alone.

5. You keep hitting the same wall

Maybe it's overthinking. People-pleasing. Waiting to feel ready. Saying yes when you mean no. If the same pattern keeps showing up in different areas of your life, it's usually worth looking at what's underneath it.

6. You've talked it through, and talking isn't enough anymore

Friends and family can be wonderful support. But they also know you in a certain way, and sometimes they want you to stay the same. A coach can offer an outside view and help you turn insight into action.

7. You're ready to take responsibility for what comes next

This is the big one. Coaching works when you're willing to do the work between sessions. Not perfectly, and not all at once. But you're open to trying something different.

When coaching might not be the right fit yet

We'd rather be honest about this. Coaching might not be the right first step if:

  • You're in crisis, or finding it hard to get through each day

  • You're dealing with a mental health condition that needs treatment

  • You're hoping someone else will fix things for you

In the first two cases, a GP, psychologist or counsellor is usually the right place to start. We've written more about the difference between coaching and therapy if you're unsure. If you're struggling right now, you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14, any time.

What the first step looks like

You don't need to have it all worked out before you reach out. Most people don't.

At Innerform Health, everything starts with a Clarity Session. It's an up to 45-minute conversation about where you are, what's been getting in the way, and what moving forward could look like. There's no pressure to commit to anything.

Each of our coaches works with people at a different stage of life:

Common questions

How do I know if I need a coach or a therapist? If you're functioning but feel stuck, coaching is often a good fit. If you're struggling with your mental health or daily life, start with a therapist or your GP.

What if I don't know what my goal is? That's completely normal. Getting clear on what you actually want is often the first part of the work.

Is coaching expensive? It's an investment, and costs vary between coaches. A good coach should be upfront about pricing and happy to talk it through before you commit.

You don't need to have it all figured out.

Most people don't. If something in this post sounded familiar, take our 2-minute quiz and we'll match you with the right coach.
